The Fear of the Lord Ain’t A Phobia

To fear God is not, by any means, similar to a fear of snakes, or fear of insects or fear of ghosts. How can we have a personal relationship to someone whom we fear?

Imagine yourself with a boyfriend or girlfriend whom you know has the habit of eating human beings. How can you ever establish an intimate relationship with someone like that knowing that at any time you can be his/her lunch?

So ano ba talaga ang ibig sabihin ng pagkakaron ng takot sa Diyos? I’ll make it simple for you.

It just means you believe in His existence.

Again, when we speak of “believe”, it’s not the dead “believe” but the active “believe.”

You believe that there is Someone who is in total control of everything. You believe that you are living in the mercy of that Someone. That that Someone is all-knowing, all-seeing, all around. He knows everything you have done. He can see you everywhere you go.

You believe that there is Someone invisible who is always involved with the things that happen in your life. That you are not in total control of your life. That you need to submit in whatever He wants you to do.

You believe that you are not alone in your journey. That there is an invisible force that guides your way.

I believe this is the kind of fear that God wants us to have. Fear as in acknowledgment and submission to authority.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

When you truly believe in His existence, you will be wise enough to be careful with what you do or what you say. You will be wise enough not to go against Him or offend Him. You will be wise with your dealings. You will be wise to acknowledge that you cannot do everything on your own. You need that Someone.

And guess what. That Someone is willing to help. That Someone is named God whose name is Jesus.
